Uniting Through Sport
ports have the power to bring people together. At BOCUSCO, we connect Boulder and Cuba through shared athletic experiences that foster friendship, health, and cultural exchange.
Running Toward Connection
From local races to challenging marathons, our athletic events are more than just competitions—they’re a way to build lasting bridges between our communities, one stride at a time.
At BOCUSCO, we believe in the power of sports to unite people across cultures and borders. From organizing community runs in Cuba to fostering athletic exchanges, we’re dedicated to strengthening the bond between Boulder and Cuba through shared passion and perseverance. Our commitment to promoting sports goes beyond competition—it’s about building lasting friendships and inspiring healthy, active lifestyles.
A Legacy of Athletic Connection
Boulder is known for its active, athletic community, and this spirit of adventure extends to our work with BOCUSCO. We’ve leveraged our love for sports to foster meaningful connections with our Cuban counterparts. In 2003, we organized the first MaraYateras 7K run in Palenque, Yateras—a small but powerful event that brought together runners from both Yateras and Boulder. This race marked the beginning of a tradition that has connected our communities through the shared experience of sport.
Expanding the Reach
What began as a local 7K run has grown into a grueling 33K race over the La Farola highway, one of Cuba’s most challenging and scenic routes. The event, held annually until 2019, attracted some of Cuba’s best runners, with BOCUSCO playing a key role in organizing and supporting the race. We provided not only logistical support but also essential gear, like new running shoes for Cuban athletes, helping to level the playing field and ensuring everyone could participate.
Sports as a Cultural Bridge
Sports are more than just physical activity—they are a way to build bridges between cultures. BOCUSCO’s sports initiatives have been about more than just the races themselves; they’ve been about fostering camaraderie, respect, and mutual understanding. By participating in these events, athletes from Boulder and Cuba have had the chance to learn from each other, share their cultures, and develop lasting friendships.
Reviving Traditions Post-Pandemic
The last La Farola race took place in 2019, just before the global pandemic brought such events to a halt. As we look forward to the future, BOCUSCO is committed to reviving these athletic traditions and expanding our sports programs. Our goal is to continue using sports as a means to connect our communities, inspire healthy living, and promote cultural exchange between Boulder and Cuba.
The Future of Sports at BOCUSCO
Looking ahead, BOCUSCO is excited to expand our sports initiatives, exploring new ways to connect Boulder and Cuba through athletic events. Whether it’s through running, biking, or other forms of physical activity, we believe that sports will continue to be a powerful tool for building strong, healthy communities and fostering meaningful cross-cultural relationships.
