Nurturing Creativity, Building Bridges
From art exchanges to supporting local talent, we are committed to enriching lives through creativity. Join us in our mission to celebrate and preserve the rich artistic heritage of Yateras while strengthening our cultural ties.
In the heart of Cuba, art is more than just expression—it’s the soul of the community. Our ongoing efforts, in collaboration with the talented artists of Cuba, are fostering a cultural exchange that bridges communities and enriches lives. Together, we are celebrating creativity, preserving cultural heritage, and building lasting connections through the power of the arts.
The Inception of Cultural Exchange
BOCUSCO’s journey in arts and entertainment began in 2004, with a groundbreaking art exchange between school children from Yateras, Cuba, and Boulder, Colorado. This initiative was designed to foster understanding and connection through the eyes of the youngest members of both communities. The children of Yateras created artwork that depicted life in their vibrant and diverse community, while the children of Boulder offered their own artistic perspectives. These pieces of art were then exhibited in public spaces, first in Boulder and later in Yateras, creating a powerful cultural dialogue between the two communities. This project was made possible through the “Cuban Connection” dance benefit and a grant from the Boulder Arts Commission, with the Boulder Public Library’s Children’s Library hosting the first exhibit.
Supporting Education Through Art
Beyond the exchange of artwork, BOCUSCO has actively supported the educational infrastructure in Yateras. The Arts and Education Committee has played a crucial role in enhancing the Yateras community library by providing essential resources such as office supplies, school materials, and educational tools. These efforts have helped to ensure that the children of Yateras have the resources they need to thrive academically and creatively, furthering our mission to build lasting connections through cultural and educational exchanges.
A Commitment to Creativity
Yateras, despite its small size, is home to an impressive 88 schools, including 82 primary schools, three middle schools, a university prep school, a technical school, and a school for special education students. The education system in Yateras is designed to nurture talent in various fields, including the arts. Talented students in art, music, or sports are given the opportunity to attend specialized boarding schools in the Guantánamo province. Education in Yateras is comprehensive and free, with all necessary supplies provided by the government. The prioritization of arts education in Yateras reflects the community’s deep commitment to fostering creativity and preserving its rich cultural heritage.
The Artistic Legacy of Yateras
One of the most remarkable artistic achievements in Yateras is the “Stone Zoo” (Zoológico de Piedras), created by the coffee-farmer-turned-sculptor, Angel Iñigo Blanco. Over the past 25 years, Iñigo has transformed the natural landscape of Yateras by carving more than 425 stone figures on a hillside near his home. These sculptures include lifelike depictions of animals, as well as historical scenes from Yateras’ past, such as a Taino settlement and the capture of a runaway slave. This unique blend of nature and art has not only become a symbol of Yateras’ cultural identity but also a testament to the community’s enduring artistic spirit. Iñigo’s son, Angelito, has since joined him in this work, carving over 90 sculptures and ensuring the continuation of this artistic legacy.
The Future Impact of Arts in Cultural Exchange
As BOCUSCO looks to the future, our commitment to arts and entertainment as a means of cultural exchange remains steadfast. We believe that by continuing to support and promote the arts in Cuba, we can further strengthen the bond between our two communities. Our future projects will focus on creating more opportunities for artistic collaboration, both through virtual exchanges and future in-person events, allowing the rich cultural traditions of Yateras to be shared with new audiences in Boulder and beyond. By fostering these connections, we aim to create a lasting impact that will benefit both communities for generations to come.
